Living in Cantonment
North Escambia County. More land for the money, a practical base for HCA Florida West, and a genuinely different pace from the city.
- Staff at HCA Florida West
- Buyers who want land, workshops, or space for equipment
- Anyone who actively wants to be out of the city
Cantonment is where the map stops being about the water and starts being about space.
What it offers
Land, primarily. More of it for the money than anywhere closer in, which makes it a real option if you want a workshop, room for equipment, or simply a property that is not shoulder to shoulder with the neighbours.
For HCA Florida West staff it is one of the practical north-side choices.
The trade-off
You are a long way from the beach and a real drive from downtown. If your picture of the Gulf Coast involves being fifteen minutes from the water, this will not deliver it.
It is also the least flexible of the north-side options if your employer might change. It works well for the north campus and considerably less well for the central ones, so think about how likely that move is before you commit.
What to check before you commit
On larger and more rural lots there are questions that never come up in a subdivision: well and septic versus municipal utilities, easements and access, and how water moves across the property. Get these confirmed by the appropriate professional or the county rather than assuming.
Then the usual: the drive at your real hour, flood zone determination, and school zoning direct from the district.
Working at one of these?
Cantonment: common questions
Is Cantonment a practical place to live if you work at HCA Florida West?
Yes. It is one of the areas on the north side that makes sense for that campus, along with Ferry Pass and Ensley. It suits buyers who want more land than the closer-in areas offer and are willing to drive for it.
What is the trade-off with Cantonment?
Distance from the city and from the beach. It is a genuinely different pace, which is the appeal for some buyers and the drawback for others. It is also further from the central hospitals, so it is a poor fit if you might move to Baptist or Sacred Heart later.
